Avoiding a Void While Embracing a Void
Sitting in a box in the Hockney Gallery, with a 16mm camera set up to shoot single frame exposures, visitors to the gallery were invited to shoot frames. The audience participates in the recording of the performance, if they decline no record exists. On this occasion 962 frames where shot. The resulting frames take the format of a 16mm film that runs for 48 seconds. The names of all the participants were documented. By transforming the making of a film into a performative act the work explores the complex relationship of using lens-based media to represent performance.
